Highlight of the Week...Our Christmas Tree

The weeks are flying by, and thankfully so, as I'm very much looking forward to a cup of tea next week when this Detox is over. But for now, here's my Highlight of the Week...

Putting up the Christmas decorations this year was a little stressful and here's why...

Things I've Learnt from putting the Christmas decorations up this year:

Husbands shouldn't help...
Why oh why do Christmas lights work one year and not the next? Our tree has built in lights that looked so pretty last year and this year they decided not to participate in the festivities. The Hubster tried for quite a while to fix them but ended up removing them from the tree entirely. At one point I'm sure I heard him mutter the words 'punch' and 'poxy tree'. But thankfully they both made it out alive. Needless to say, I quickly sent the Hubster off to work and carried on with the mess and the chaos.

You put tree skirt around the tree before decorating it...
Yes I left this until last. Yes it was difficult. Yes the tree nearly fell on my head. Yes some of my carefully placed baubles fell off. Yes one broke. Yes I was annoyed.

Don't bother doing the "Christmas Clean" until after the decorations are up...
Every year I like to give the home a winter clean, preferably before the decorations are put in place. But this year I realised there really isn't much point. Glitter, dust and tree debris get into every corner and onto every surface and so I practically had to start all over again once the decorations were complete. Apologies to the neighbours, that was our hoover going at 1am this morning. But I would have laid in bed thinking about the mess (Monica style) all night if I didn't clear it up before bed.

It takes hours to put lights up along the kitchen cupboards by yourself...
You know the story...you make one end stick and then the other end falls down. Forty minutes it took me, along with several different adhesives (blu tac, sellotape, duck tape, drawing pins...) and a whack on the thumb with a hammer before those pesky snowflake lights stayed in position. They do look lovely, but at the time I can assure you, they didn't. Particularly the part where I almost fell off the kitchen worktop sticking my foot in the sink full of dirty washing up. Brilliant.

I don't like my Christmas accessories...
I blame the internet and my new found love of blogging. I've seen a hundred other festive decor and arrangements that I now don't like anything that I clearly loved last year. I now have to sneakily search, purchase and place new items over the next coming weeks, all the while practicing my most convincing phrase to the Hubster, "What that babe? No, we've had that for years!" I'm convinced I can pull it off.

Christmas Music doesn't necessarily put you in a festive mood...
I tried, I really tried but in the end the CD kept jumping and then skipping to some awful song by The Wombats and don't even get me started on Status Quo. I lost count of how many terrible covers of Band Aid's tune I wanted to tune out of...really the original will always be the best. I just wasn't feeling the Christmas vibe last night. So I did what any normal person would do at this point...I put on Meat Loaf in concert and I rocked my way away the Christmas tree like a Bat out of Hell. Meat Loaf Rules!

Ghostbusters 2 is always on when I put up my tree...
Spooky coincidence? I know for a fact that it was on last year when I put them and it was again this time. Random...it's about as Christmassy as any other film without anything related to Christmas in it. Again, did not help with my mood.

I like a glass of wine when putting up the decorations...
I'm convinced that I found this year's decor dilemmas particularly stressful due to the fact that I couldn't have a glass of wine. It was a definite absence in my Christmas tree decoration experience and I kept having to refer to my weight  and inch loss for moral support during this harsh time. Roll on Wednesday (joke...I'm going to be good!)

But overall my highlight of the week has to be finally sitting down admiring our Christmas tree and it does look lovely, so all the stress was worth it.

Before...

After...
How has everyone else got on with their Christmas decorating?
What's your Highlight of the Week?

Until next time,

With Love & Christmas Chaos,

Katie x
